Why Exercise Burns Less Than You Think (And Why That's Fine)

Exercise is the most reliable health intervention we have and one of the most overestimated weight-loss tools. Both statements survive the data. The gap between them is arithmetic — three specific overcounts that stack on every treadmill display and food-log entry.

Overcount one: the machine markup

Validation studies put cardio-machine displays 15–40% above measured energy expenditure — ellipticals worst, treadmills (with weight and incline entered) best. The markup comes from default-weight math, gross-burn accounting, and marketing benchmark selection. A "600 kcal" session is typically a 400–480 kcal session; the reality check prices your display.

Overcount two: the net-vs-gross gap

Displays count everything during the session, including the ~1.2–1.4 kcal/min you were burning anyway. Over an hour that is 72–84 kcal of burn you get for free while reading this sentence. Honest energy math uses net — and the haircut is proportionally biggest exactly where people most want the credit: light and moderate activity.

Overcount three: compensation

The subtlest one, documented in controlled trials: exercise increases hunger and prompts "recovery" reductions in spontaneous movement (you sit more, fidget less after hard sessions) and unconscious intake ("I earned this"). Meta-analyses of exercise-only weight interventions find participants typically lose 30–40% of the energy deficit the sessions theoretically created. The deficit was real; the body clawed part back through channels no display shows.

Why this is fine — actually better

The case for exercise was never the calorie column. Against the full evidence: exercise preserves lean mass during weight loss (diet-only losses are 25–30% muscle; added exercise cuts that dramatically), maintains loss long-term (the registry data on maintainers is unambiguous), improves insulin sensitivity, mood, sleep, and mortality risk in dose-response fashion — independent of weight change. A tool that modest for weight and mighty for health deserves to be understood honestly, not sold through flattery.

The practical rules

  1. Track food honestly; count 0–50% of exercise burn toward it. The scale trend arbitrates.
  2. Use one consistent burn method (the MET calculators here) — relative comparisons beat absolute claims.
  3. Choose activities you will repeat — adherence compounds; intensity doesn't survive abandonment.
  4. Judge by performance and trend, not by the session's calorie receipt.

Exercise's honest calorie number is smaller than the marketing — and the honest health number is far larger. Both are worth knowing precisely.
